Biography
Dr. Apte specializes in neurology and has an extensive background in research, teaching and consulting in the field of neurological sciences.
Upon graduating from a prestigious medical school in India, Dr. Apte worked as a senior research fellow at the Haffkine Institute and the Pasteur Institute. He then received graduate training in Neurology at the Harvard, Longwood Neurology program where he also worked as a clinical fellow in Neurology and worked in Dr. Ed Murray’s infectious diseases lab as a clinical associate. He then completed a fellowship in Neurology at the Stanford University Medical Center.
Upon completion of his graduate training, Dr. Apte joined private practice. Dr. Apte’s professional appointments have included active staff positions at the VA Medical Center in Livermore, CA; ValleyCare Medical Center (Now Stanford) in Pleasanton, CA, and directorships with PainCare Medical Clinic, and the Sleep Disorders Center in San Ramon and Pleasanton, CA. He served as President and CEO of multi-specialty groups Oak Hill Medical Group (1987-1988), Northern California Physicians Associates, Inc. and Alpha Medical Group, Inc. (1986-1992).
The similarities neurology and immunology, and his in-depth study in this area, have allowed an easy transport of his medical expertise to the research arena. More recently, as neurological complications of HIV such as HAND and HAD come into focus, Dr Apte’s interest has been stimulated by the need for a therapeutic vaccine to restore immune signaling and have the adaptive immune response to reach highly conserved sanctuary regions such as the microgoia and astrocytes in the brain. Antiretrovirals have not been spectacularly effective in addressing neurological complications of HIV. Dr. Apte hypothesizes that restoration of immune signaling would lead to a remission of HIV. He founded two companies to develop the therapeutic vaccine and bring it to commercialization.
He has served in numerous professional medical associations and is currently an active member in the American Academy of Neurology, American Public Health Association, International AIDS Society, International Association of Providers of AIDS Care and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His consulting appointments include The National Multiple Sclerosis Society (1991-2007) and the Epilepsy League of America (1991-2008). Dr. Apte has authored and co-authored a number of articles for medical publications and has several publications pending. He has been awarded several patents for the therapeutic vaccine.
Dr. Apte is a member of the Scientific Advisory Boards of AREV Life Sciences Inc., Neuropathics Inc., Zaaz Therapeutics Inc., Trility BioSciences Inc., Biostax Corporation, and Innovative MedTech, Inc. among others.
